The treatment of carcinoma of the rectum by electrocoagulation

Abstract
Electrocagulation has been advocated as an alternative to abdomino-perineal resection for low-lying rectal cancer. Tumors that are high enough to be treated by anterior resection or pull through are not included in this category, for there is general agreement that these should¢¥ he resected. Mucosal and polypoid lesions are amenable to electrocoagulation. Anterior wall lesions in women should be resected because of the treat of rectovaginal fistula. Similarly, annular lesions are rarely controlled by local treatment, and stricture may result.
Such treatment by electrocoagulation might be an excellent chance of controlling either the local lesions permanently or at least until the patient dies of already established distant metastases.
We have recently experienced 3 cases, with good results by electrbcoagulation for low-lying rectal cancers at Dept. of Surgery, St. Mary¢¥s Hospital, Catholic Medical College. A brief review of literature was made.
